Brief History of Tarot
Tarot cards are thought to have first entered europe in the 14th century from persia to northern italy and were used to play a game called tarocchini. The first documented use of tarot in europe was in switzerland where a ban was placed on the use of tarot cards in 1367. Documented evidence for the use of tarot cards as a tool for divination exists from 1540 which shows a method of divination using the coin suit
Tarot cards were, for a long time a privilege of the upper classes only. The use of playing cards on the whole were restricted to being used by the upper classes, however over time tarot cards became exempt from these restrictions. Currently the oldest surviving tarot card decks are three decks of tarot cards dating to the 15th Century which are today housed in the Yale University Library of New Haven.
Tarot Spreads
There are a wide variety of tarot spreads available some of which focus on specific types of question while others are used for general readings. The position of each card in the spread is significant depending which spread you are using and there are many different types of tarot card spread available. The tarot spreads can range from a single card to a spread which uses all 78 cards.
